Hurricane Harvey Raising Price of Gasoline

(Newswire.net — September 4, 2017) –The average gasoline price in the United States rose from $ 2.45 per gallon to $ 2.52, The United Services Automobile Association (USAA) announced on Friday, September 1st.

At least two pipelines – one going through the South of the United States to New York, and the other heading north to Chicago – are working slower or have stopped working due to floods and the following damage.

Fuel prices per gallon rose as much as 15 cents in the last 24 hours in a few counties, among which are Dallas and El Paso in Texas, Athena in Georgia and Dayton in Ohio, while the expenses went up as much as 10 cents in South Carolina, Ohio, Delaware, Maryland, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia and Texas.

Part of the pipeline which goes through Texas is closed and before reopening it a few inspections are to be had, said the official of the Colonial Pipeline Company.

With the rise in prices, there have been records of people queuing for gas in a few cities, because some of the gas stations are out of fuel. One Chevron gas station was selling fuel at 2,29$ per gallon before the Hurricane, and on Thursday,  August 31st, they charged 2,99$, while a Shell gas station charged 3,97$ for a gallon of regular fuel.

Experts, however, do warn buyers not to panic.

If people start buying fuel on a large scale out of fear, as some did in Texas, it will only worsen the problem and help raise gas prices even more, while the shortages of fuel will be greater, says the analyst Patrick DeHaan for the GasBuddy.com.

Tom Kloza, director of global energy analysis at the Oil Price Information Service, said to CNN that “retailers can either go out of business or pass their costs along.”

He predicted that refinery shutdowns will lift per-gallon gas prices by 15 to 25 cents nationally, up from his earlier estimate of up to 20 cents.

CNN also wrote that the eventual impact to gas price increase is likely to be limited by the U.S. shale oil boom. Strong levels of oil production have left the country with ample stockpiles of gas and oil that can cushion the impact of Hurricane Harvey.

Trump Pledged $1 Million of His Own Money to Help Storm Victims

(Newswire.net — September 4, 2017) –US President Donald Trump is joining celebrities who have pledged $1M of their own money to help victims of the historic hurricane.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Sandra Bullock also have pledged $1M of their own money to help to storm victims.

“I had a chance to speak directly with the president earlier and I’m happy to tell you that he would like to join in the efforts of a lot of the people that we’ve seen across the country,” said White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

She added that Donald Trump had not yet decided which relief organization to donate money to.

He would ask the White House press corps in helping him to decide, since journalists are very good at researching and have been doing a lot of reporting into the groups and organizations that are best and most effective in helping, explained Sarah Huckabee Sanders, but she doesn’t know how to answer the question if Trump’s money would come from the Trump Foundation or the Trump Organization?

”He said he is personally going to give. I don’t know the legal part of that exactly…. He said his personal money”, Sanders responded to the media.

Last Tuesday President Trump and first lady Melania Trump visited Texas to survey the ongoing devastation from Hurricane Harvey, and he promised to help and support “in the most productive way possible, not through just words, but also action.”

“What I found to be the most profound during the visit was not only the strength and resilience of the people of Texas, but the compassion and sense of community that has taken over the state,” said President Trump while adding: “Probably there’s never been anything so expensive in our country’s history.”

On August 25th, Harvey made landslide near Corpus Christi, Texas, as a category 4 storm with 130mph winds. It has also set a new US record for rainfall  – more than 40in (100cm) of rain was recorded in some parts of Houston and Cedar Bayou, near Mont Belvieu, 33 miles east of Houston hitting 51.88in (132 cm) as of 3:30 pm on Tuesday.

It caused catastrophic flooding, forcing a large number of people to evacuate. The total damage and losses are estimated at $ 42 billion, making it one of the five most expensive storms in U.S. history.

Rare Dinosaur Fossil Discovered in Colorado

(Newswire.net — September 4, 2017) –The Triceratops fossil, which is millions of years older than typical Ice Age fossils, was accidentally discovered at a construction site.

The rare dinosaur fossil was found by a construction crew in the town of Thornton, Colorado, during construction for a new fire and police station.

On July 31, one of the workers suspected it was a fossil and they contacted the experts from the Museum of Science and Nature (DMNS) in Denver.

By August 28, Joe Sertich, the museum’s curator of dinosaurs, confirmed, after initially clearing away some of the dirt at the site, that the fossil indeed belongs to a triceratops.

Also, construction has been halted because museum staff wants to look for any remaining bones.

According to curator Sertich, most fossil finds along the Front Range are from the Ice Age, just 10 to 12-thousand years old, but this fossil is much older, reports City of Thornton.

Sertich explained that this dinosaur has been laying here for at least 66-million years. He also added that they are ”really lucky in this case that it was recognized as fossils and they got the call.”

Triceratops is a genus of herbivorous ceratopsid dinosaur that first appeared during the late Maastrichtian stage of the late Cretaceous period, about 68 million years ago in what is now North America.

It is one of the last known non-avian dinosaur genera, and became extinct in the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event 66 million years ago.

The term Triceratops, which literally means “three-horned face”, is derived from the Greek.

Triceratops are estimated to have reached about 25.9 to 29.5 ft in length, and 9.5 to 9.8 ft in height, and from 13.000 to 26.000 lb in weight. They are among the largest of all land animals.

Triceratops is one of the most popular dinosaurs, because of its unique look, first of all because of the large skull, and has been featured in film, postal stamps, and many other types of media.

Harvey Could Be One of The Most Expensive Storms in US History

(Newswire.net — August 31, 2017) –The exact number of victims is still unknown because rescuers are still struggling to reach many stranded in the state’s worst storm in more than 50 years.

At least 30 people are dead and tens of thousands have been displaced, but this number is certainly not final because the storm continues to batter Texas with rain and floods, and a reservoir near Houston spilled over.

On Tuesday President Trump and first lady Melania Trump visited Texas to survey the ongoing devastation from Hurricane Harvey.

While there Trump praised the efforts put into fighting the disaster ”It’s a real team and we want to do it better than ever before. We want to be looked at in five years, in 10 years from now as, ‘This is the way to do it.’ This was of epic proportion. Nobody’s ever seen anything like this and I just want to say that working with the governor and his entire team has been an honor for us,” said the president in Corpus Christi, Texas.

He promised to help and support “in the most productive way possible, not through just words, but also action.”

“What I found to be the most profound during the visit was not only the strength and resilience of the people of Texas, but the compassion and sense of community that has taken over the state,” said President Trump and added: “Probably there’s never been anything so expensive in our country’s history.”

According to Chuck Watson, director of research and development at Enki Research, the estimated damage has increased to more than $ 30 billion, including its impact on transportation systems, electrical power and the work force.

“If Harvey had been a run-of-the-mill hurricane, it would have cost less than $ 5 billion of damage,” Watson said to the AFP, and added:

“The problem is that Harvey is acting more like a big, wet tropical storm. Harvey has dumped more rain in three days than Tropical Storm Allison did in five, and it’s on track to almost double the Allison rainfall.”

On August 25th, Harvey made landslide near Corpus Christi, Texas, as a category 4 storm with 130mph winds. It has also set a new US record for rainfall  – more than 40in (100cm) of rain was recorded in some parts of Houston and Cedar Bayou, near Mont Belvieu, 33 miles east of Houston hitting 51.88in (132 cm) as of 3:30pm on Tuesday.

It caused catastrophic flooding, forcing a large number of people to evacuate, but also fear – what will come in the next days because Harvey is now hitting Louisiana and the worst could be yet to come.

Ecstasy Pills with Trump’s Name And Face

(Newswire.net — August 24, 2017) —Police in Osnabrück,  a city in the northwest German state of Lower Saxony, Europe, report that the drugs were found on Saturday, at 21:00, when officers stopped a Peugeot 307 hatchback with suspect license plates.

They searched the car on the A30 motorway, from Austria to Hanover, a city in Germany, and came across 5.000 of orange tablets shaped like the head of the US President Donald Trump.

The front side of each orange pill has Trump’s face and on the back the word ”Trump” and five stars in a line.

The purchase value of the tablets is about 11,000 euros, and the sale value is around 39,000 euros.

In the same car, police also found a large sum of money.

The driver of the car was a 51-year-old man, who told the German police officers that he and his 17-year-old son were returning home from Netherlands, where they wanted to buy a car, but didn’t.

Both of them were arrested, and the car was confiscated.

Ecstasy tablets, often called the party pill or the love drug, contain a chemical MDMA (methylenedioxymethamphetamine), which can cause dangerous psychoactive effects on the central nervous system. Ecstasy causes anxiety, high blood pressure, an elevated heart rate, feelings of euphoria, and sometimes consumers can hallucinate.

MDMA can be mixed with other dangerous substances: amphetamine, methamphetamine, ephedrine…

Ecstasy comes in tablets ranging from 12 mg to 131 mg, in various shapes and colors, and the price is about $ 10 per tablet.

Reportedly. this is not the first time that someone made a drug designed to resemble a current politician.

According to CBS News, in 2009 police in Texas found pills shaped to look like ex-US President Barack Obama.

Also, since the 1960s images of Che Guevara (Argentine revolutionary), or Uncle Sam (a personification of the American government or the United States in general) have appeared on paper used for LSD doses, a psychedelic drug known for its potent psychological effects.

Wall Street is Cautious as the Threat of Nuclear War Looms between Washington and Pyongyan

(Newswire.net — August 23, 2017) —  North Korea might have succeeded in its efforts to miniaturize a nuclear weapon to fit on an inter-continental missile. The U.S. and its allies naturally distrust Pyongyang and the fact that it could have a nuclear weapon is enough reason to be uncomfortable.  To further complicate matters, North Korea has threatened to direct its missiles towards Guam, a U.S. island territory with 163,000 inhabitants.

U.S President Donald Trump doesn’t like being threatened and certainly not by North Korea’s regime. He has said that military action against Pyongyang is “locked and loaded” because “the United States will not tolerate our citizens or our allies being threatened by this rogue regime.”

Following the spate of verbal attacks and threats, investors are starting to consider the possible effects of a nuclear war on the financial markets. This piece looks at how nuclear tensions can actually affect the markets going forward.

1. Volatility returns to the markets

The talks about the possibility of a nuclear war or military action with North Korea have already triggered a bout of volatility in the markets. For instance, the CBOE S&P 500 Volatility Index has spiked 24.08% in the last one month; in contrast, the S&P 500, NASDAQ Composite, and Dow Jones Industrials have been practically flat as seen in the chart below.

2. Contraction in stocks

The second effect of the war mongering on the market is that there’s a capital flight leading to contraction in stock prices. Silvia Doyle, a market strategist at Weiss Finance notes that “investors hate uncertainty and the uncertain nature of wars is causing investors to pull their funds out of stocks and related assets at least until the tensions ease up”. For instance, the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial average have both recorded two weeks of straight losses this year. The NASDAQ composite has recorded three weeks of straight losses.  More so, yields on the 10-year U.S. treasury declined to two-month lows.

3. Gold will post some gains

Gold is a traditional safe haven asset and investors flock into the stability that gold provides in times of market volatility. As expected, the yellow metal is slowing creeping up to winning ways as it booked gains of 2% last week to mark a two-month high. The yellow metal is currently trading around $1,275 an ounce. If the political landscape continues to heat up on the international scene, we can expect the bullish outlook for gold to become stronger. Investors should pay special attention to how China acts/reacts to the war mongering between U.S and North Korea because, when China sneezes, gold tends to catch a cold.

4. Impact on market will be short-lived

Despite the fact that the war mongering between Washington and Pyongyang is causing jitters on Wall Street, market experts believe that the effects of the threats of war on the market will be short-lived. To start with, political strategists believe that the chances of a military action or nuclear strikes are actually low.  In fact, it will be suicidal on North Korea’s part to make a move that could trigger military action from the U.S. – and we can mostly deduce that survival is high on the list of North Korea’s regime. Hence, going forward, even though the market is likely to experience an increased dose of volatility going forward, the tensions won’t weigh the markets down for too long.

Barcelona Van Attack Suspect Shot Dead

(Newswire.net — invalid date) –The probable driver of the van that killed 15 people on Barcelona’s Ramblas last week, was shot on Monday, while wearing what was believed to be an explosives belt.

“We confirm that the man shot dead in Subirats is Younes Abouyaaqoub, author of the terrorist attack in Barcelona,” tweeted Mossos- The police force of Catalonia.

Subirats is a municipality in Catalonia, Spain, one hour’s drive west of Barcelona, located high in the hills and surrounded by vineyards.

According to Spanish media, a woman called the police and said that there was a suspicious man in the vicinity.

After the shooting, a bomb-disposal robot was deployed to the body of the murdered man, before police were able to approach him because he was wearing an explosives belt. They removed the belt but it is still not confirmed whether it is real or fake.

The mayor of Sant Sadurni, Maria Rosell i Medall, said that the situation is under control now. She added that Sadurni had always been “a safe and peaceful place without any indication to suggest any terrorist activity in the area.”

The other suspects, who are believed to have been part of a 12-member cell, were killed by police, or were killed in an explosion in a house in Catalonia, which happened the day before the van attack on Thursday.

Younes Abouyaaqoub, the 22-year-old Moroccan and resident of the northern town of Ripoll, has been at large since last Thursday’s attack when a rented white Fiat van killed fifteen and wounded more than a hundred people on Barcelona’s Las Ramblas, a popular street in the center of Barcelona.

The van was driven mowing down pedestrians, targeting people, weaving from side to side, witnesses said.

The Las Ramblas boulevard, that runs three-quarters of a mile, is always full of tourists and locals. During the attack, hundreds of people started stampeding through the market, running away from the van.

Witnesses said it was a terrible scene, like something out of a horror movie, people were panicking and screaming.

The driver of the van fled on foot.

The so-called Islamic State has said it is behind the Las Ramblas attack.

Total Solar Eclipse We've Been Waiting For 99 Years

(Newswire.net — August 22, 2017) –A total solar eclipse occurs every 12 to 18 months, but it is not visible to the most of the population because it occurs above the ocean as Earth is predominantly covered with water.

Monday’s eclipse above the United States is the first visible one in the 21st century and the first since 1991 when it was visible only on the main island of Hawaii.

The eclipse began on August 21 on Monday, in the state of Oregon, about 10 a.m. local time, and ended at 2:48 p.m. local time at Charleston, South Carolina. During that time the total solar eclipse crossed over more than 14 US states, and is referred to as the “Great American Eclipse”.

About 12 million Americans live in the area where this astronomical phenomenon was visible, and the eclipse was observed by millions of Americans, who were using protective glasses, telescopes and cameras.

They were able to witness the incredible sight during which the Moon was directly in front of the Sun for two minutes, causing almost complete darkness and a sudden drop in temperature of almost ten degrees.

Even US President Donald Trump came out of the White House to see the eclipse. The president watched the sky with his wife Melania, son Baron and his closest associates.

This solar eclipse was significant for scientists because it was a rare opportunity where they could study the upper part of the Sun’s atmosphere, which is usually invisible.

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partially obscuring the image of the Sun for a viewer on Earth.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon’s apparent diameter is larger than the Sun’s, blocking all direct sunlight, turning day into darkness.

For safe viewing of solar eclipses, we need special glasses which can filter ultraviolet and infrared light. The eye’s retina has no pain receptors, and thus damage could occur without a viewer being aware.

Future total solar eclipses will cross the United States in April 2024, being visible in 12 states, and also in August of 2045, when 10 states will be able to see it.
